A real thriller at the Lee
Playhouse, Ft. Lee Virginia took place on June
18, 2005. The Natural Physique Association hosted
it's 7th annual National Championships once again with
the addition of fitness/figure competition. The show as
the young people would say, was off the hook. Every athlete
came to represent as they entertained the majority of what would
be, a North Carolinan crowd. In the (50-59) division JW
Hicks was in much better condition than ever as he came in 8lbs
heavier and less bodyfat than last year. He was an unanimous winner
over Gene Boggs. Randy Glass and the overall Masters Universe had a
lot of thickness and was not in quite the conditon Hicks was,
however had a lot more upper body muscle that allowed him a
majority decision. In the fitness/figure
category Melissa Johnson and Dena Banks fought right into the
night show. Crystal Bailey took over the stage with
her gift to electrify but wasn't in her best condition to
beat Johnson or Banks. In the finals Dena edged out
Melissa. In women bodybuilding, Cid Davis (50+) division,
clearly the champion went against another champion, Linda Carpenter
(40-49) in the masters and came up short. Linda a complete package
and phenomenal athlete with lots of experience was a clear cut
winner. She's absolutely ready for the NPA Pros and might be a
reason for Eleanor Mc Bride to return. Both of these ladies
went into the open division and represented it well.
Linda once again, dominated the competiton, receiving all
first place votes through out the entire day and evening.
She also earned best female poser. Toni Johnson and JW Hicks were
the lone couples and they performed magnificently to
the families, friends and fans. Dressed in pink JW wore it
proudly as they went through their act together, receiving a well
round of applause from the audience. The men division was tough and
Calvin McIntyre who dominated the men lightweight class presented a
much better package than he did last year. He has the upper
body of a heavyweight. I predict he will win this title
one day if he continues to improve. Middleweight Gene Collins
who also won the state middleweight title look even better
this time than he did in April. Dr. Rodney Gaines came up
one point short against the younger Collins. In the Lt.
Heavyweight class, stood Timothy Clanton and the overall male
winner of the show. Timothy has more muscle than most people. His
only short coming in the past was his inability to
show his physique to the judges. However today he came
through. The Heavyweights were the show, as they all came in
good and big per Natural athletes standard. Allen
Crowder of the new millenium gym squeaked by State
Champion Carl Matthews Jr. by one point. Dr. John Dabbs and
Superman Roderick Kirkland was very competitive, even though
Kirkland was off today placing 4th place, something he is not
use to doing. Best Poser could of went to Collins,
but Matthews got it and deserved it. This year was positively an
out of sight Natural National event with lots of excitement and
most of all fun for the athletes, fans, families and friends. Also
out of this came 8 new Pro qualified NPA athletes, Thank you for
your support and we will now prepare for next year. (For additional
